Inclement weather poses unique transportation problems. A new device helps school buses in snow and ice covered roads. This product is called Onspot Safety Chains. This device is permanently mounted under the spring axle of the drive wheels in the rear wheel well. By utilization of a control switch on the driver's console, a swing arm automatically lowers to the engaged position. Attached to the arm is a small eight inch diameter wheel with six 14 inch chains attached. When engaged that small wheel revolves parallel to the perpendicular tire; the spinning motion of the tire turns the small wheel and then throws the chains under the wheel with each revolution. The article states the chains were originally developed and tested in Sweden and have been proved effective. Units are currently in use in 25 school districts in the United States.
