MAINTENANCE OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS IN LONDON

In London there are now 2400 traffic signal installations, about 1300 of which are linked to urban traffic control (utc) systems by dedicated British telecom data lines. Faults at traffic signal installations have been shown to cause delays to traffic up to 20 per cent higher than is necessary. The measures taken in London and the economic advantages of large-scale maintenance operation are described in this paper under the following headings: rapid recognition of faults; rapid reporting of faults to the maintenance contractor; rapid response and repair of faults by the maintenance contractor in line with a rigid performance specification; reduction in the number of faults by improving the reliability of new equipment, and improving the standards of installation and maintenance work; economic advantanges of large-scale maintenance operations.
