TEST INSTALLATION OF CHLORINATED-RUBBER TRAFFIC PAINT. RESEARCH REPORT
Three-thousand three-hundred gallons of chlorinated-rubber (CR) traffic paint were installed by New York State maintenance personnel to compare its workability and durability to the Department's standard modified alkyd (MA) traffic paint. Successful installation of the CR paint was achieved with only minor modifications to normal equipment and procedures. "No-track" times of 3 to 6 minutes, compared to about 1 minute for MA paint, required greater efforts to minimize traffic damage to CR paint lines during striping. The strong-smelling MEK solvent used in the CR paint caused worker concern, but review of available safety data indicated both this solvent and the toluene normally used in the MA paint require similar safety precautions.
