APPLICABILITY OF CURVBRG GRIDWORK ANALYSIS TO CONTINUOUS, STEEL GIRDER BRIDGES. FINAL REPORT

Varying interpretations of very limited field testing suggested need for an expanded investigation of the range of applicability of the CURVBRG grillage analysis to slab and metal girder bridges. A significant body of literature was found to exist pertinent to field and model tests of such structures, with sufficient documentation to permit establishment of CURVBRG input and correlations between theoretical and measured data. Results of Caltrans field tests are published with studies of three Iowa and New York bridges. Spread sheet tabulations of measured and theoretical data comparisons are accompanied by plots of individual load cases and envelopes of parametric maxima. CURVBRG is shown to be as accurate for continuous as for simple span structures. Conservatism for loaded exterior girders is evident and becomes marked for three-girder structures. Program usage for rating, rehabilitation and design is advocated. Additional studies of other programs to improve correlations for bridges with three girders are recommended.
