COMMUTING AND "TURANA". A METHODS STUDY IN OEREBRO COUNTY

PENDLING OCH "TURANA". EN METODSTUDIE I OEREBRO LAEN

The project has been carried out in two stages. In the first stage commuting in the southern and western parts of the county including Oerebro and Karlskoga was studied using the method developed in 1980 by Volvo Transportsystem. In the second stage services selected from the results of the first stage were evaluated using the model Turana. Services with the number of potential travellers given by Turana were entered into vehicle planning program Forplan. The results give the smallest number of vehicles needed for traffic with number of economically acceptable services. The project has produced both good and not so good results. Turana was found to work well after some modifications and can be used for testing of alternative routes and services in both regional and urban traffic. The results of Forplan were very satisfactory. Coupling of Turana and Forplan also gave good results. It was found that 22 buses are needed to provide 73 return trips during the morning commuting period. Overall, the methods used yield excellent planning data for county bus services. Data relating to commuting must be exact. Forplan can be used with Turana or alone. It facilitates evaluations of alternative routes or time tables.
