CAR COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION. FULL SCALE TEST
VIVALLA BIL. FULLSKAEFOERSOEK MED BILANDELSFOERENING
This report describes the running of a car co-operative association in Vivalla, a residential area of Oerebro in Sweden. "Vivallabil" began in May 1983 with 4 new compact cars on long-term leasing. Although funded initially by the Oerebro municipality, the association now owns the cars, and has taken over responsibility for the running of the co-operative from the initial project leaders and the municipality. The cars are picked up and left off at a centrally located petrol station (also a co-operative). Payment is made directly there and the association itself sets the tariff in accordance with the principles of prime cost. During the evaluation period of 15 months 755 car hirings took place. The total distance driven was C. 71000 km and the total hiring duration was 11400 "car hours". The total reported payments amounted to just over 67000 sek exclusive of petrol and membership fees. At the end of the period "Vivallabil" had approximately 30 members. This experiment showed that cars can be made available collectively through an association, and that peoples' diverse car needs can be solved better in this way than through the traditional method of private car ownership.
