EXPANDING YOUR TAXICAB OPERATIONS. A MANUAL ON CONTRACTING FOR TRANSIT SERVICES
This booklet contains information on exploiting the taxicab as a means of public transit which can often operate without benefit of subsidy. Operators and public officials are challenged to work together to achieve a partnership from which everyone benefits. The contents: Reasons for contracting; types of programs already devised; working programs utilizing taxicabs; questions and answers about this mode; contacts involved in such programs; and two sample contracts between a public body and a taxicab company. Communities and taxicab operators find mutually beneficial many of the agreements instituted. Communities contract out for taxicab service as a substitute for low ridership bus routes and other costly public transportation services. Taxicab companies generate added revenue steadily, smoothing daily and seasonal demand peaks. Contracts also reduce or eliminate what otherwise would be government competition; there also can be a public-relations benefit for involvement in community transportation programs. Taxicab substitution for low-ridership transit or other costly transportation systems can save money or make possible service where there was none before. Elderly and handicapped are well served by taxicab service.
