STREAMLINING SHIPYARD OPERATIONS

Two pieces of equipment for modernizing shipyard facilities are described. One is a hydraulic ship lift in which the vessel enters the lifting platform in the longitudinal direction from the sea and can leave it in the same direction on the landward end. In addition, to suit particular local conditions, other hydraulically-driven ship-lifting installations have been developed in which the vessel is lifted partly horizontally and partly on inclined tracks arranged parallel or perpendicular to the ship's centerline. The other is a lockgate for the water end of a slipway which also forms a connecting bridge between the side slip walls. The design provides a skin plate stiffened by horizontal frames and vertical posts which transmit about two-thirds of the loads to the slip bottom direct, and about one-third to the track formed by a cantilevered stiffening girder. In this way, it was possible to keep the whole structure so light in weight that it can be installed or removed by the yard's 100-t floating crane.
