AGT101 ADVANCED GAS TURBINE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Garrett/Ford Advanced Gas Turbine (AGT) Technology Project, authorized under NASA Contract DEN3-167, is sponsored by and is part of the US Department of Energy Gas Turbine Highway Vehicle System Program. Program effort is oriented at providing the US automotive industry to high-risk long-range technology necessary to produce gas turbine powertrains for automobiles that will have reduced fuel consumption and reduced environmental impact. The AGT101 powersection is a 100 hp, regenerated single-shaft gas turbine engine operating at a maximum turbine inlet temperature 2500 degree F. Maximum rotor speed is 100,000 rpm. All high temperature components, including the turbine rotor, are ceramic. Development has progressed through aerothermodynamic testingof all components witth compressor and turbine performance goals achieved. Some 170 hours of AGT101 (1600 degree F) testing has been accumulated on three metal engines. Individual and collective ceramic components screening tests to 2100 degree F have been successfully accomplished. In addition, ceramic turbine rotors have been successfully cold spun to the required 115,000 rpm proof speed (15% overspeed) and sujected to dynamic thermal shock tests simulating engine conditions. Assembly of the engine with ceramic structures is underway. Engine testing of the ceramic structures and the ceramic turbine rotor is pplanned in the near future.
