AGT 100 ADVANCED GAS TURBINE TECHNOLOGY PROJECT
The AGT 100 Advanced Gas Turbine Technology Project continued its proof-of-principle examination of an alternative engine for passenger car propulsion. Evaluation of small, high-efficiency components included combustor and regenerator rig testing, and a new thermal shock rig is being brought aboard for testing static ceramic turbine components. Ceramic component development has focused on injection-molded turbine rotors and slip-cast turbine scroll assemblies. Also emphasized was the development of methods for detecting flaws in ceramic components. Several acoustic techniques are being pursued. Two experimental engines have been fabricated and tested for a total of 41 hours, evenly divided between the two. The second engine achieved its 20 hours on one build of the turbomachinery. Several ceramic components have been engine tested at typical heat-up rates. All engine testing has been accomplished using ceramic cumbustor, regenerator disk and bulkheat, and various insulators and spacers.
