A NEW APPROACH TO THE PRESENTATION OF MARINE RADAR INFORMATION

The new method of radar presentation, which is the subject of this paper, seeks to overcome the problem by presenting the radar information at all times in a 'ship's course up' mode on a bright daylight viewing television screen and by displaying automatically, either true or relative movements of all targets by means of clear echo tracks whose lengths can be up to the equivalent of typically 6 minutes tracking time on the longer ranges. Own ship is always maintained stationary in the center of the picture and the movement of targets across this picture thus always represents the relative motion of the associated ships. This new approach to the presentation of radar information gives the Master at least as much information, and with no more effort, as he would obtain by looking out in daylight, through the wheelhouse window in clear weather.
