A SURVEY OF MARINE ACCIDENTS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO TANKERS
The committee which looked into the scientific and technological aspects of the "Torrey Canyon" disaster in 1967 recommended that an assessment should be made of the probable future frequency of large-scale oil pollution along the United Kingdom coastline so that the scale of effort necessary to meet such threats could be determined. The Defense Operational Analysis Establishment of the Ministry of Defense, which has considerable experience in the collection and analysis of large amounts of data, undertook the assignment. The coverage which was eventually decided on included all tanker accidents world-wide involving vessels of over 100 g.r.t., and all accidents in North-West European waters involving any type of ship of over 500 g.r.t. The complete data bank contains details of some 22,000 accidents covering the complete range from minor scrapes and bumps up to the catastrophic "Torrey Canyon" stranding itself. A summary of some of this information is presented in a series of tables and diagrams, the emphasis being on the tanker situation.
