BLACK COMMUTING IN PRETORIA: TRAVEL PATTERNS FROM THE HINTERLAND OF BOPHUTHATSWANA. SPECIAL REPORT

The Pretoria black commuting study questioned 1045 commuters from the hinterland of Bophuthatswana and five other black residential areas in the Pretoria metropolitan area. This report describes the travel patterns of commuters on three routes from the hinterland of Bophuthatswana. The 162 respondents who travelled on the three surveyed routes made use of 12 different mode combinations. The main problems on these routes were long travel times, the low proportion of total travel time spent in-vehicle, and long transfer times, walking times at the start and work end and waiting times at the start of the journey. One of the main recommendations is that more emphasis should be placed on reducing the time commuters spend outside the vehicle. (TRRL)
