TRANSPORT PLANNING PRACTICE--A REVIEW

An outline of the history of transport planning provides evidence that practice has in the past been gradually moving towards more comprehensive planning and management of roads and public transport. On the assumption that past trends will be maintained a view of the future can be outlined. This suggests a continuing move towards comprehensive planning for transport needs, and the management of demand by the use of integrated systems of public transport operation and road traffic control, coordinated to achieve a balance of transport resource allocation which is seen to be in the best interests of the community at large.
