LONG DISTANCE TRAVELLING TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE

This report presents papers and panel discussion at the annual meeting conference of the Swedish Transport Research Commission on November 7, 1984. The conference was divided into four sections as follows; (1) how are the travelling habits changing? In the first section travelling across the Swedish borders was discussed as well as long distance travelling within Sweden; (2) which possibilities will be offered the travellers in the future? In this section a scenario of the future was presented i.e. Rapid trains, the airlines in the nineties, express bus traffic as an alternative to road, railway and air traffic; (3) other factors. The terminal as a link between different modes of travelling was discussed and also how to book and pay for journeys in the nineties; (4) the role of the state and in long distance travelling. In this section government regulations and financing was discussed with regard to the long distance travelling. The presentations of the papers were followed by a panel discussion. The subject was; is it time for deregulation in the field of public transport? (Author/TRRL)
