STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF SHIP PLATING SUBJECTED TO UNIFORM LATERAL LOAD
The current formula used by the U.S. Navy to select thicknesses of rectangular panels of plating subjected to uniform lateral loads is explored and its supporting rationale identified. Design criteria in the form of allowable stress and permissible permanent set, as appropriate, are set forth. A new formula in dimensionless form, which is compatible with the existing formula and the design criteria, is proposed.
