3.3 KV ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FOR LARGE CONTAINER SHIPS
Describes the design features and subsequent operational experience of a class of ships which has been installed with a 3.3 kV generation and distribution system. The system is considered to be unique in the marine field in that it perpetuates the medium voltage system practice and operates with an insulated neutral. The aspect of excessive voltage stresses, said to exist with this type of installation, due to intermittent earth faults caused by the system capacitance, is examined. Details of measurements which have been made to quantify the capacitance values are given. Large power transformers are necessary which, when operating from a limited supply cause difficult switch-on transient conditions. The phenomenon and the influence exerted on the system operation is examined. Features leading to reliability, operating flexibility and facilities for safety of personnel are other matters which are discussed.
