RESEARCH NOTE: THE EFFECT OF INLET DISTURBANCES ON TURBULENT PIPE FLOW
Disturbances near the entry to a pipe are shown to effect significantly the development of the turbulent velocity profile. The attainment of a 'fully developed' profile at a Reynolds number of 4 x 10 to 5th power takes rather longer than is often assumed consequently, some care is required when designing test facilities with entry pipes (or channels) providing inlet conditions for internal flow component investigations.
