REVIEW OF CURRENT STATUS OF YIELDING FRACTURE MECHANICS
The article reviews recent developments and the current status of treatments developed for assessing the behavior of cracks in materials which undergo various degrees of yielding before fracture. Particular attention is given to the crack opening displacement concept, and the crack tip J contour integral method. It is concluded that these are closely related attempts to elict a one-parameter characterization of elastic plastic crack tip stress fields; that either is a useful yardstick of the major geometric and stress level features of differing fracture circumstances, for a given degree of through thickness constraint; and that as at present formulated, neither is completely convincing in taking account of variations of in-plane constraint.
