ANCHORING AND MOORING EQUIPMENT ON SHIPS
Concern has been expressed at the number of failures occurring in ships anchoring and mooring systems, but because many of the items contributing to such systems are not covered by Classification Rules reliable data on the incidence of failure do not exist. As a step towards rectifying the situation a search has been made of records kept by Lloyd's Register and enquiries have been directed to over 100 ports in an attempt to ascertain both the approximate number and the types of defects that occur. The results of these enquiries are presented in a manner which enables achieved results to be related to the assumptions on which the machinery and equipment are based and suggestions are made as to what steps should be taken to reduce the frequency of the more common types of failure.
