PROSPECTS IN NAVAL GAS TURBINE POWER PLANT MACHINERY
The naval machinery engineer must be constantly alert to design change and improvements as new technology becomes available or is proven. Prospects for future power plant designs that will be available to meet future ship needs are described. In particular, new high performance gas turbine engines, new fuels, machinery maintenance monitoring techniques, improved propulsions such as high skew propellers and waterjets, advanced speed reduction devices, combined cycle plants (gas/steam) improved noise suppression equipment and techniques, improved clutches, improved thrust reversing techniques such as reversing gears, closed cycle plants, and superconducting electric drive machinery are discussed and a potential application of this machinery technology is described to demonstrate how design change is an important part of the naval machinery engineer's life.
