HYDRODYNAMIC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE CONTROLLABLE PITCH PROPELLER FOR THE GUIDED MISSILE FRIGATE
The paper describes the decisions made in developing the hydrodynamic blade design for the Guided Missile (FFG) Frigate's controllable-pitch propeller. The use of specific performance requirements relating to propulsive efficiency, propeller cavitation, etc. and associated weighting factors are discussed. This "trade-offs" between full-power speed, design endurance speed, and cavitation performance. The restrictions on the hydrodynamic design of propeller blades imposed by the controllable-pitch feature can be severe. Considerations of spindle torque, blade strength, vibration and cavitation imposed by these restrictions were all investigated for the FFG propeller design and are discussed in the paper.
