DIRECT-REVERSING GAS TURBINE NEARS TESTING STAGE
A major refinement in the design of the heavy-duty gas turbine for ship propulsion applications has been made and is described in this article. This refinement involves the use of a direct-reversing load turbine in place of the conventional load turbine that can spin in only one direction. This new machine, in a ship, will eliminate the need for outside reversing elements, such as reverse reduction gears or controllable pitch propellers. The reversing gas turbine, designed to be used with a fixed pitch propeller and a conventional marine reduction gear, will comprise a complete, compact propulsion system. Tests on the unit are described, and the concept of operation and the economic viability of the unit are also discussed.
