AN AUTOMATIC ULTRASONIC TESTING METHOD FOR BUTT WELDED JOINTS ON HULL STRUCTURES

The ultrasonic test method has superior features, as compared with the radiographic examination, for detecting internal flaws, such as cracks and lack of fusion in welded joints on hull structures. It has recently come into practical use in the field of nondestructive examination, replacing radiographic inspection. The authors have developed a horizontal type ultrasonic test instrument equipped with automatic scanning and recording devices for checking butt-welded joints, and on the spot test results have been found successful. This paper describes an outline of the instrument, together with investigation and experiments regarding the searching conditions, in comparison with radio-graphical results, for automatic one side welded butt joints with flux backing.
