TRAVEL SERVICES SIGNING IN VIRGINIA
An experimental project to evaluate proposed national standards and criteria for official highway signs within Interstate rights-of-way is described, present activities are reviewed, and future plans for extension of specific information signing for travel services to other Interstate routes in Virginia are outlined. The experimental project revealed that "logo" signing did not produce unusual main line changes, did not increase main line shoulder usage, did not produce unusual main line speed changes, and met the travel services signing needs for a majority of interstate travelers. At the present time, program to provide permanent specific ingormation signing for travel services has been approved which will be conducted in the same manner as the experimental project. The information panels will be fabricated of aluminum and erected on steel breakaway supports. The minimum State criteria for specific information signing for travel services are listed.
