FULL-SCALE BRIDGE TESTING
Evaluatory tests conducted on four deck girder highway bridges were directed toward three facets of design criteria: lateral distribution of load; dynamic response to the bridges subjected both to rolling loads and vibratory loading; and ultimate strength and mode of failure of each of the four bridges. Details are given of the testing procedure, and the results are presented of the static tests to failure. The tests revealed that even though the load to the supporting girders might be unevenly distributed at first yield of the steel, the loads generally were distributed such that all girders reached their full flexural capacity before failure. It was also shown that a conservative lower bound to this total bridge capacity can be calculated by the use of the principles underlying the load factor design method in the Interim Specifications of the AASHO (1971-1972).
