ROUTE PREPARATION AMONG MOTORISTS. A LARGE-SCALE INTERVIEW

A household survey has been conducted among 166 motorists to investigate how they prepare themselves for a trip in terms of route choice. Quota sampling was applied with respect to four input variables: (a) sex; (b) age; (c) economic stratum; (d) city of residence. The interview dealt with route preparation for a recent trip as well as a hypothetical trip of which the destination was defined by the interviewer. Route preparation associated with a recent trip showed itself to be relatively inflexible and insensitive, in the sense that it could hardly ever be shown to depend upon any of the variables introduced in the sampling design. The "swift connection" criterion was prominent among the reasons to prefer one route over another, the more so when the interviewee's annual mileage was higher. About 6% of the respondents said they had written down the route to follow before leaving, a percentage which did not depend upon other variables investigated. Approximately 3% of the respondents had experienced difficulties underway, and 1% had diverged from their planned route by mistake. Route preparation for the hypothetical trip -to a destination unknown to the respondent, and with the motive of visiting recently moved friends -was more sensitive to several variables than was the case for the recent trip. For example, it appeared that the tendency to write down the selected route was a function of all four input variables. There also appeared to exist an association between the way in which route preparation was performed and the expectations that were maintained about the chosen route. This became manifest both in the estimated duration of a trip and in what specific locations the driver was prepared to pass during the trip. The results of the investigation have implications for modelling the processes of route preparation, route choice and route guidance, as well as for more everyday practical matters. (TRRL)
