This report presents time series data on federal, state, and local governmental transportation-related expenditures and receipts for fiscal year 1977 through 1982, with estimates for fiscal year 1983. Much of the data on federal expenditures and budget receipts come from The Budget of the United States Government: Appendix, Fiscal Years 1979 through 1985, and from Government Finances in 1982-83, U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census; state and local governmental revenue and expenditure data came from the Government's Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census; data on federal revenues and expenditures for highways were obtained from Highway Statistics; data on the Corps of Engineers and the Panama Canal Commission came from the originating agencies. Data on both state expenditures and the federal grant funds for the pipeline safety program were obtained from the Materials Transportation Bureau of the Department of Transportation. The transportation revenue estimates included are those funds identified as user charges, taxes, or fees in the various sources. The relationship of transportation finance to total national government finances is explored, and trends in federal, state, and local transportation financial activity are discussed. The distribution of federal, state, and local transportation financial activity, by mode and jurisdiction, is outlined.
