A SIMPLE INSTRUMENT FOR MEASURING THE CURVATURE INDUCED IN A ROAD SURFACING BY A WHEEL LOAD
The paper describes a new instrument for measuring the longitudinal curvature of a road surface between the dual wheels of a truck, the curvature meter. The curvature of a road surfacing has previously been found to be a measure of the flexural stresses within it, and is related to the development of surface chicken net cracking. Curvature measurements have to date been made with the Benkelman Beam an instrument normally used for measuring deflections, and curvature results obtained with the two instruments on a number of different types of road structure are compared. The new instrument has the advantages over the Benkelman Beam of greater accuracy, shorter measurement time, shorter time of analysis of the observations, improved portability (being only 12 inches in length) and lower cost.
