EXPERIMENTAL COUNTY ROAD
Highway engineers are showing unusual interest in a county road in Houston County, Minn., on which construction was completed in June. The reason for the interest is the use to which crushed-rock limestone aggregate is being put. Limestone is plentiful throughout southern Minnesota. County Highway Engineer H. M. McLaird designed the road using crushed limestone as the aggregate for a hot plant-mix base laid with a paver, and covered with 1 1/2 in. of plant-mixed asphaltic surfacing. The 2-in. bituminous-treated crushed-limestone base is laid on a 6-in. sub-base. Contract price for the 3 1/2-mile improvement was $121,663. The county plans to build an identically designed section on another county road later this season.
