ROADWAY SIGN ILLUMINATION
Guidelines are provided for the basic lighting principles for roadway signs so they will convey the same message at all times to the motorist. Ground mounted signs should be illuminated where there is a need to attract special attention because of an unusual hazard or because of competitive signs. Signs are placed overhead to provide early visibility of the message to motorists. Illumination of signs nullifies the effect of condensate and other forms of moisture which may render reflective material ineffective. Roadway signs cover the entire range of the visible spectrum, so the problem is to adequately illuminate the sign face while closely reproducing the color values assigned by usage and agreement. Types of illumination, light and lamp sources, and uniformity of illumination are covered by these standards. /HRIS/
