THE STATUS OF THE NATION'S HIGHWAYS: CONDITIONS AND PERFORMANCE. REPORT OF THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION TO THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS

This is the eighth in a series of biennial reports submitted to Congress pursuant to Section 3 of P.L. 89-139 (amended by Section 160 of P.L. 97-424) (23 U.S.C. 307) which requires estimates of the future highway needs to the Nation. The purpose of this report is to describe selected aspects of the system including finance, physical and operating characteristics, and future highway needs. In addition, these data are compared with similar information from two prior reports, 1981 and 1983, to provide a time series of trends on finance, conditions, and needs. The final chapter is devoted to an examination of the social, economic, annd demographic factors that contribute to highway demand, with particular emphasis on geographic shifts that have influened demand in the recent past and can be expected to continue this influence through the end of the century.
