BULK-DENSITY AND COARSE-FRAGMENT DETERMINATIONS ON SOME PENNSYLVANIA SOILS
A new, relatively simple method for the determination of the bulk density and the volume of coarse fragments less than 3 inches in diameter in soils containing appreciable amounts of coarse fragments was developed. The new portion of the proposed method, called the Saran-lined excavation method, consisted of spraying a soil excavation 6 to 8 inches in diameter and up to 8 inches deep, with a Saran plastic solution, lining the excavation with a Saran sheet, and determining the volume with water. The volume and measured densities of coarse fragments were determined on the material from the excavation and used to calculate corrected bulk density. Horizons of an Arendtsville gravelly silt loam, Hartsells chennery loam, Lawrenceville silt loam, and two Morris very stony silt loam soils were used in the study.
