PROCEEDINGS OF LA HERMOSA SYMPOSIUM ON SOIL ENGINEERING MAPPING
The Division of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers organized a meeting in September 1964, of persons who had gained experience in producing soil engineering maps in this country. The report on this Symposium, which was held at La Hermosa, near Pretoria, contains a description of the mapping exercise carried out and gives in the text, in tables, on a block diagram and on an annotated air- photograph, details of the information gathered. The appendices to the report should act as a guide to the way in which data from every soil engineering mapping project should be recorded in future, viz (1) Annotated representative stereo-pair(s), (2) Block diagram(s) incorporating all mapping units, (3) Table recording elements of the airphoto-patterns, and (4) Table(s) listing engineering appraisal of legend units.
