FRACTURE MECHANICS - ITS APPLICABILITY TO CONCRETE
The applicability of linear-elastic fracture mechanics to Portland cement pastes, mortars, and concretes was determined by the fabrication, testing, and analysis of plate specimens containing a precast flaw. The results show that the concepts of linear-elastic fracture mechanics are not applicable to concrete materials. A rigid plastic cracked strip model was developed to provide an estimate of the microcracking zone that exists in the region of the crack tip in cement pastes, mortars, and concretes.
