EFFECT OF GRAVEL SIZE ON STRENGTH OF CONCRETE
The compressive strength of concrete is lower than that of mortar matrix, as the interface between gravel and mortar matrix is a weak point of concrete. The concrete strength decreases as the particle size becomes larger or the volume fraction of gravel increases. Test results show that the decrease in strength is slighter as the sand content in mortar increases and that the decrease remains almost constant at any water/cement ratio when the mix proportion of cement paste, sand and gravel is kept constant. The sand content in mortar plays an important role in strength development of concrete through affecting the shrinkage of mortar matrix, which causes the weakening of the bond strength at the interface.(A) See also IRRD Abstract No. 205029
