CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF CLAY FREEZING IN THE MEXICO VALLEY
CONTRIBUCION AL ESTUDIO DE LA CONGELACION DE ARCILIAS DEL VALLE DE MEXICO
AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN STARTED TO DETERMINE THE COOLING RATE OF GROUND WHICH HAS BEEN FROZEN WITH LIQUID NITROGEN USED AS COOLING FLUID. THIS PAPER SHOWS THE FIRST RESULTS OF HEAT DIFFUSION OBTAINED WITH DIFFERENT KINDS OF CLAY IN THE MEXICO VALLEY, WITH A RADIAL FREEZING PROCESS. TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN CONTAINERS UP TO 120 CM IN DIAMETER AND 60 CM HIGH, AND LIQUID NITROGEN INJECTED IN A CYLINDER (PROBE) PUT INTO THE GROUND. A CONSTANT FLOW OF THE REFRIGERATING LIQUID WAS MAINTAINED DURING THE WHOLE EXPERIMENT, AND THE EVOLUTION I5 TEMPERATURE WAS MEASURED AT VARIOUS POINTS OF THE MATERIAL BY MEANS OF THERMOCCUPLES LOCATED IN THE GROUND AT DIFFERENT DISTANCES FROM THE PROBE AND AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES. THE RESULTS OBTAINED SHOW THAT THERE IS NO DISTURBANCE OF THE GROUND AT A DISTANCE EQUAL OR GREATER THAN FIVE TIMES THE FREEZING RADIUS. WITH ADEQUATE CONTAINERS, THE PROGRESSION SPEED OF THE FREEZING FRONT CAN BE DETERMINED ECONOMICALLY. THIS SPEED DEPENDS ON THE AVAILABLE FREEZING ENERGY AND THE THERMAL DIFFUSION OF THE MATERIAL.
