TYRE PRESSURE AND ITS EFFECT ON PAVEMENT DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE
THE EFFECT ON THE ROAD STRUCTURE OF AN INCREASE IN THE TYRE CONTACT PRESSURE IS INVESTIGATED. THE FOLLOWING MODES OF FAILURE ARE DISCUSSED: 1, FATIGUE FAILURE OF SURFACING LAYERS. 2, FATIGUE FAILURE OF CEMENT-STABILIZED BASES. 3, FAILURE DUE TO DENSIFICATION OF SURFACING LAYERS. 4, CONSOLIDATION FAILURE DUE TO DENSIFICATION OF LOWER LAYERS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT MODERATE INCREASES IN TYRE INFLATION PRESSURE IN THE FUTURE SHOULD NOT HAVE A MARKED EFFECT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF PAVEMENTS, BUT INDISCRIMINATE INCREASES SHOULD BE DISCOURAGED. /AUTHOR/
