ASPHALT EMULSION STABILIZATION
Experience in Minnesota of the slow setting grade and medium setting grade of the anionic emulsion which is used to stabilize granular road building materials is recounted, and some typical projects are reviewed. Aspahlt emulsion materials can be mixed with aggregate in the presence of water; the addition of water to the emulsion aggregate promotes easier mixing and more complete disperision of the asphalt over the individual aggregate particles. In the design of asphalt emulsion stabilized mixtures, both the emulsion and water quantity are varied. The stabilized mixture is then compacted, cured and tested to determine which of the combinations result in the most stable mixture in terms of cohesiveness and interparticle friction, the durability of the mixture in water, its resistance to disintegration on freezing and thawing, and several water proofing characteristics. Subgrade sands are stabilized with 0.06 to 0.08 gallons per sq. yard, mixed to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Many miles of gravel shoulder have been stabilized to a depth of 4-inches to produce low-maintenance bituminous shoulders on older sections of highway. Crushed rock (1.5 inches or more) has been placed on the native sands during the placement of subsequent layers of sub-base or base material, in order to prevent the intrusion of this native soil into the upper layers. Some practical observations related to asphalt emulsion stabilization projects are noted.
