GRAPHS FOR DETERMINING THE DIMENSIONS OF THE FOOTING OF CENTRALLY LOADED FOUNDATIONS

Reference is made to equations which show that standard pressure depends not only on the characteristics of the foundation soil, but is a function of the smallest dimension of the footing b and depth h; in turn the dimensions of the foundation determine its weight and consequently, to some extent, the load on the foundation soil. The problem of determining the required dimensions of the foundation footing is resolved either by the method of trial and error, or by solving quadratic equation for a strip foundation and a cubic equation with one unknown for a spot footing. Graphs are presented in which the following curves are plotted: (1) the magnitude curves where P is the given load is t/running meter of the foundation at the upper edge and b the width of the foundation; (2) the magnitude curves where P is the given load at the upper edge in tons and b square, the area of the foundation soil of a foundation square in plane. In both graphs the values of b are laid out along the horizontal and the values of sigma along, the vertical. The mathematical deductions are detailed; it is shown that the abscissa of the point of intersection of the line with the curve of the pressure from a given load is the unknown dimension of the foundation footing b at which the pressure under the foundation footing from the given load is equal to the standard pressure on the soil for a foundation of this dimension minus the pressure from the weight of the foundation itself. An example is cited as illustration.
