FAILURE OF AN OIL STORAGE TANK FOUNDED ON A SENSITIVE MARINE CLAY
The discussers refer to the choice of value for the bearing capacity factor N sub c, and it is noted that a factor of safety of unity is obtained if N sub c is equal to 5.3. Unfinished experiments are quoted in which the discussers obtained values of N sub c which were at least as low as this. Details are outlined of the tests which were carried out on clay, and in which reworked samples with an initial water content of 175 percent were consolidated in 4 in. diameter rings to a final thickness of 1.25 inches under a pressure of 1.1 tons/sq. ft. A typical plot of load vs. penetration curve is shown from which values of N sub c were obtained by extrapolation. Values of N sub c thus obtained average around 4.0.
