RELIABLE PROTECTION OF WIRE PICKUPS USED IN TESTING PILES-CASINGS
Laboratory investigations have shown that 2.5-mm thick capron coating aroung pickups (used to measure stresses in reinforcements in concrete piles ) are most effective. Pickups with a base of 25 mm were attached by acetone glue to the reinforcement rods which were first heated to 30-40 deg C. Three leads in vinyl insulation which were embedded in a cambric sheath, were soldered to the pickups. The pickups and the points of soldering were covered with a layer of ED-6 epoxy resin so that the resin coating had elasticity and high strength, it was heated together with maleic anhydride for 4 h at 80 deg C before application to the roads. The places for attaching the pickups were enclosed in a detachable metal mold. A 5-mm diameter pouring hole is in one half. Compression of the mold before pouring the capron was accomplished between the nozzle and tightening screw of the casting unit. Molten capron was forced under a pressure of 13-14 atm into the mould preheated to 60-70 deg C. For good quality, it is necessary that the capron scraps be carefully freed from mechanical admixtures and dried to a water content of no more than 0.3 percent. Details are given of the concreting of the casing.
