CRUACHAN VAIDUCT TRUMPHING OVER POOR ROCK AND NARROW SITE
A brief description is given of the construction of the Cruachan Viaduct along the side of Loch Awe which, because of the poor rock (badly fissured schist with frequent soft bands and deposits of scree) and the narrow site, was constructed as three separate structures, differing according to ground conditions. The central 265 m structure is of Vaiduct construction; the western 70 m structure is a continuous reinforced box girder constructed on scree, which under the box, was grouted; and the eastern 66 m structure is a prestressed box girder bridge. /TRRL/
