TUNNELING THROUGH THE AUSTRIAN ALPS
Two methods used in the excavation of the Tauern Tunnel, Austria, are full-face drilling and blasting, and full-face boring. A third method, introduced when poor quality rock was encountered, involved removing the face in sections to increase safety where the instability of the rock made work dangerous. This article describes the equipment used in alternating these three excavation methods to suit changing rock conditions. Reference is made to the Austrian method of flexible tunnel construction in which the tunnel is hung within the mountain by means of rock bolts bolted to its periphery. Similar methods are being employed in the construction of the nearby Katschberg Tunnel. /TRRL/
