THE TOOLS OF CONSTRUCTION

This report, which is designed to guide the construction user in applying information from manufacturers, distributors and other sources, provides information on how to select, buy (rent or lease), operate, maintain and protect construction equipment. The establishment of requirements is a necessary preliminary process in selection of tools. Details are given of a cost analysis process which involves consideration of a number of key interrelated factors. To determine a machine's suitability, it is necessary to analyze all the variations and options available. Characteristics are reviewed of scrapers, tractor shovels, motorgrader, hydraulic excavators off- and on-highway haulers, belt conveyors, trenching equipment, compactors, rollers, lift trucks, mobile cranes, pile- hammers, paving equipment, compressors, drills and pumps. Equipment finance alternatives are considered, and the operation of tools in earthwork, paving, concreting, excavation, lifting, piledriving etc. are reviewed. A discussion of maintenance covers, among other aspects, the establishment of downtime costs, wear-point problem, preventive maintenance (a checklist is provided), and the localizing of repair problems. Equipment theft is discussed and measures are outlined for its prevention, the recovery of equipment, and equipment identification to aid recovery. The profitable disposal of used equipment is also considered.
