FINITE ELEMENT FOR ROCK JOINTS AND INTERFACES
In this closure to the discussion, the author answers the question of how absolute displacements are ultimately found for modal points with degrees-of-freedom that have been transformed from absolute to relative displacements prior to solving the equations of equilibrium. The author directs attention to his original paper. The displacements u sup T and u sup B correspond to nodes where transformation from absolute to relative will be performed, and to nodes where displacements remain absolute respectively. The relative displacement includes the effects of slip and of the deformation of the upper continuum element. The independent degrees-of-freedom of the transformed system, u sup B and the relative displacement, are found by solving the equations of equilibrium. The absolute displacement, u sup. T, can then be found by means of the equation presented.
