SETTLEMENT OF DRY SANDS DURING EARTHQUAKES
In the closure of the discussion of this paper, the authors observe that the statement "test data indicate that the overburden pressure has no significant effect on the settlements produces" was made with reference to sands subjected to the same sequence of cyclic shear strains. It is noted that the overburden pressure clearly affects the settlement characteristics of a sand but it also affects the shear strains in the soil resulting from a given base excitation. Thus for a given sand in a given condition the vertical settlement due to a given series of horizontal shear strain cycles appears to depend only on the number and magnitude of the strain cycles involved. With regard to an influence of prestraining on the settlement of sands subject to cyclic loading, the authors agree that previous strain history does affect the settlement characteristics of sands. It follows that such effects could have a significant influence on predicted settlements and that this factor merits consideration in estimating settlements of sands due to earthquake shaking.
