LONGITUDINAL CRACKING OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAM
A comprehensive longitudinal cracking survey has been carried out on 112 prestressed concrete highway bridges. As a result of the survey hair cracks in 79 bridges were found. These cracks were not growing in width, but very gradually in length. A series of laboratory tests were also carried out to reveal the causes and to develop a preventing method for longitudinal crackings. The frost resistance of grout, influence of internal pressure in the cable duct, and secondary transverse strain due to pre- stressing were studied. It is concluded that in order to prevent longitudinal cracking great care should be taken to ensure the soundness of grout against frost, that there is sufficient concrete cover, and correct arrangement of sheaths. /Author/TRRL/
