MECHANICS OF FIBER-REINFORCED CONCRETE
This paper briefly describes some of the current developments in the use of fibers in cement-based matrices. It is shown that conventional theories cannot fully explain the crack arrest mechanism of fibers in concrete systems. High modulus fibers behave differently from low modulus fibers in their composite action, and the fiber-matrix interfacial bond and the limited ductility of the cement matrix are shown to influence significantly the properties of the composite. The factors that influence the behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete in the fresh and hardened state are discussed. Some typical practical applications of fiber -reinforced concrete are considered. /Author/
