AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CRACKING BEHAVIOUR OF BEAMS REINFORCED WITH RIBBED-TORSTEEL BARS
The paper presents the results of an investigation carried out in the Structural Engineering Research Centre in Roorkee as part of its research programme on reinforced concrete, when high-strength deformed bars were just being introduced in the country towards the end of 1967. The aim was to verify the reportedly superior crack control characteristics of beams reinforced with cold twisted ribbed-torsteel, the only available deformed bar at the time as compared with the cracking behavior of beams reinforced with plain mild steel rounds. The influences of surface deformation and stress in steel are the two main parameters studied, keeping all the other parameters constant within practical limits. In the test series reported, about 3,600 crack measurements and 4,000 strain measurements were made, and they were used in the analysis of the results with the help of a digital computer. The results clearly demonstrate that the crack control characteristics of the ribbed-torsteel are superior to those of the plain bars. On checking the suitability of the various existing formulae for predicting the maximum crack widths, it is found that the results are in very close agreement with the new CEB formula; statistical analysis of the crack widths shows that the distribution is Gaussian. /TRRL/
